1. What does IELTS mean? Please give details

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. There are two types of IELTS tests, Academic IELTS and General IELTS. The IELTS test contains four different modules, listening, reading, writing, and speaking. For both academic and general IELTS, the question pattern of the listening and speaking tests are the same, but reading and writing differ.

2. How long does it take to complete the test? Do I need to take all the test parts on the same day?

For the listening, reading, and writing modules, the IELTS test is two hours and forty-five minutes long. And, yes, all are taken on the same day without any break. The speaking test will be taken either on the same day or two to four days before or after the other parts. The speaking module takes thirty minutes as a whole test (including candidate preparation time, waiting time, etc.), but the assessment runs for eleven to fourteen minutes.

3. Should I use a pen during the test? Can I write using capital letters?

You can use a pen or pencil (whatever is convenient) for the writing test. For the listening and reading tests, you must use a pencil. Yes, writing in capital or block letters is allowed.

4. When and how will I receive my result? Can I apply to re-checking my score for free?

Results for IELTS on paper will be released thirteen days after your written test. And results for IELTS on a computer will be available three to five days after your test. Depending on the test center, you may get your results by SMS or online.

Yes, you can re-check your score if you are unsatisfied with the result. And that’s called an EOR (Enquiry on Results). You can apply for an EOR by contacting the test center where you took your IELTS test within six weeks of the IELTS test date. This, however, is not free. You must pay an enquiry fee. If your band scores change, the fee you paid will be refunded.

You also can request a remark for the whole IELTS test or for one or more parts. Your reviewed results will be available within two to twenty-one days of applying for a remark.

5. Do I need a passport for the test? What should I take to the test room?

You must bring your passport or national identity card on the test day. Note that no personal belongings are allowed in the test center.

6. Can I cancel or postpone my test?

If you notify of the cancellation more than five weeks prior to the test date, you will get a full refund minus an administration charge. If you postpone or cancel within five weeks of the test date, you will be charged the full fee unless you have a medical reason. If you provide a medical certificate within five days of the test, you will receive a full refund minus the local administration charge.
